Actress Beah Richards, who won an Emmy on Sept. 10 for her guest appearance on The Practice and earned an Oscar nod for her role as Sidney Poitier's mother in 1967's Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?, died of emphysema on Sept. 14 in Vicksburg, Miss., her hometown. She was 80. "I've played everybody's mother," Richards once remarked of her career, which spanned 50 years. Those screen sons included James Earl Jones, Bill Cosby and, more recently, ER's Eriq LaSalle....

Tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine, 66, whose 1970 hit "Sugar" helped inspire the smooth-jazz format so popular on radio stations these days, died in New York City on Sept. 12 following a stroke two days earlier.

Expecting

Teen-model-turned-actor Chris O'Donnell (Batman & Robin), 30, and his wife, Caroline, 27, a teacher, are expecting their second child next year. Daughter Lily Anne is 1....

Academy Award-winning song-smith Phil Collins, 49, and his wife, Orianne, 28, a translator, are expecting their first child in late spring. Collins has two grown children from his first marriage and an 11-year-old daughter from his second....

Judging Amy star Amy Brenneman, 36, and her husband, Brad Silberling, 37, a film and television director, are expecting their first baby....

Former ER actress Maria Bello, 33, and her boy-friend, Dan McDermott, 37, the head of DreamWorks Television, are also expecting their first child.

On the Mend

On Sept. 5, Rosie O'Donnell, 38, had tendon-reconstruction surgery on her arm after she sliced it recently with a knife while cutting the price tag off her son's fishing pole....

Actor Peter Gallagher, 45, is nursing broken ribs after being thrown from a horse.

Births
Oscar-winning actress Marlee Matlin, 35, and her husband, Kevin Grandalski, 35, who works in law enforcement, welcomed their second child, Brandon Joseph Grandalski (8 lbs.), on Sept. 12 in L.A. Sister Sarah Rose is 4.

Update
On Sept. 14 in London, a court granted copyright protection to photographer Alberto Diaz GutiƩrrez (also known as Korda), 72, who snapped a famous picture of revolutionary Che Guevara in 1960 and sued after the image was used for a liquor ad (PEOPLE, Sept. 25). A substantial financial settlement was also reached with an ad agency and a picture agency.

Engaged
Actor Ashley Hamilton, 25, the son of George Hamilton and Alana Stewart, who was briefly married to Shannen Doherty and then model Angie Everhart, and Sara Foster, 19, a model and the daughter of Grammy-winning composer David Foster, have pledged their intentions to marry. The couple have been together for more than two years but have yet to set a wedding date.

Suing
The latest scandal at the White House is another sexual harassment lawsuit. In a complaint filed on Sept. 13 in Washington, D.C., ex-assistant White House pastry chef Franette McCulloch, 53, seeks $2 million in damages, alleging that executive pastry chef Roland Mesnier, 56, subjected her to severe sexual harassment. McCulloch also mentions President Clinton in the papers, charging him with failure to enforce responsiveness to worker complaints about such discrimination.
