Picks and Pans Review: Who Wants to Be Me?

by Regis Philbin

After cohosting Live! with Regis & Kathie Lee! for 11 years, Philbin hit the jackpot with the fabulously successful Who Wants to Be a Millionaire quiz show. To an agent or editor, this can mean only one thing: time for Reege to write a book! This one cobbles together a series of overly precious autobiographical vignettes that, alas, are not particularly revelatory. In fact, the closest Philbin and coauthor Bill Zehme get to spilling the beans is musing on Philbin's first impression of Kathie Lee: "She came to me 15 years ago with cute little bangs and a MAJOR ATTITUDE." Philbin's trademark excitability translates oddly into print. He often uses capital letters for emphasis, as if he were hollering. And while you might want to skip the part about his enema, it's reassuring to know that big stars suffer as much as the rest of us. Which makes it hard not to like the guy—even when he's yelling. (Hyperion, $22.95)
