Picks and Pans Review: Sibling Rivalry
The Doobie Brothers (Pyramid)
Gas prices are up, sideburns are back...sounds like it's time for a revival of Nixon-era rock. The Doobie Brothers, reunited for their first album since 1991 (though sorely missing the shiver-inducing soul of sometime vocalist Michael McDonald), have even devised a single, "People Gotta Love Again," with lyrics as musty as Watergate jokes ("Brothers are killing brothers"). Hey, crime is down. How about a song about getting rid of telemarketers?
But the Doobies' bayou-lite guitar licks still make for pleasing pickup-driving music on rockers like "45th Floor," and there are strong ballads such as "Ordinary Man," a witty midlife report card ("Get ready to run, baby...this is how I am").
