>Billy Elliot Totally charming English comedy about an 11-year-old boy who loves ballet tutu much for his dad. (R)

The Contender Luridly entertaining political thriller profiles a woman vice presidential nominee involved in a sex scandal. Way more fun than the current presidential election. Stars Jeff Bridges and Joan Allen. (R)

Loving Jezebel Hill Harper (TV's City of Angels) appealingly plays a slacker romantically drawn to women who are already taken, including Laurel Holloman, in a slight romantic comedy by tyro director Kwyn Bader. (R)

Pay It Forward Pay it no mind. Even talented Helen Hunt and Kevin Spacey can't save this sanctimonious, manipulative drama from being the most loathsome piece of Hollywood hooey since Patch Adams. (PG-13)
