Decades before Coke was "it," the bubbly stuff was marketed on everything from calendars to compact mirrors as "Delicious. Refreshing" and even as a health tonic. But more memorable than the slogans were the images of smiling, ruddy-cheeked girls that accompanied them. In this light and fizzy picture book, Beyer, a collector of Coke memorabilia, shows how the ad art reflects 70 years of American history Sure it's a big plug for Coke. But even die-hard Pepsi lovers may be touched by nostalgia for an innocence the artwork invokes, one in which the shiny drugstore soda fountain was at the center of a small-town childhood.
