In an interview with Britain's Sunday Times published on Nov. 26, actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, 53, said that "when the time is right" he may run for governor of California on the GOP ticket. He did not indicate whether wife Maria Shriver, a Kennedy Democrat, would stump for him.

On Nov. 25 smoke from a log in a gas fireplace caused some $70,000 in damage to the Memphis home of Cybill Shepherd, 50, who grew up in that city and still owns a house there. Firefighters quickly brought the situation under control, and no one was hurt.

Deaths

Obstetrician John W. Walsh, who delivered two of Jacqueline and John F. Kennedy's children (JFK Jr. and Patrick, who lived only two days), died on Nov. 12 in Wailuku, Hawaii. He was 87....

Several celebrities have lost a parent recently: The Reverend Sarah Pointer, who preached at a church in Oakland and was mother to Pointer Sisters June, Anita, Ruth and Bonnie (and two sons), died on Nov. 15 in L.A. of complications from diabetes. She was 76....

Former Tennessee farmer Lee Parton, the father of singer-actress Dolly Parton and her 11 sibs, died on Nov. 12 in Knoxville of complications from a stroke. He was 79....

Geraldine Dreyfuss, mother of actor Richard Dreyfuss and a longtime political activist in antinuclear and feminist causes, died of complications from a stroke on Oct. 19 in L.A. She was 79....

Josephine Hall Esterly, the mother of actress Raquel Welch, died on Oct. 17 in Rancho Bernardo, Calif. She was 91.

Rebuffed
The Gospel Rescue Mission in Tucson informed Rep. Jim Kolbe, 58, an openly gay Republican from Arizona, that he was not welcome to help serve Thanksgiving dinner to homeless people this year, although he did so last year. "This decision is based on your...sexual orientation," a board member wrote in a rejection letter that was faxed to the congressman.

Births
Stone Temple Pilots lead singer Scott Weiland, 33, and his wife, Mary, 25, a model, welcomed their first child, Noah Mercer (7 lbs. 10 oz.), on Nov. 19 in L.A. Said Weiland, a bit cryptically: "He is healthy, wealthy and wiser than me."

Law and Order
In a plea agreement that was entered on Nov. 15 in Salinas, Calif., Reggie Jackson, 54, who had been charged with misdemeanor battery of his ex-business partner, pleaded no contest to a lesser charge of fighting in a public place. Jeffrey Haney, who co-owned a gym with Jackson, accused the baseball Hall of Famer of roughing him up during a squabble. Jackson got three years' probation and must perform 40 hours of community service.

Expecting
Actress Terri J. Vaughn, 30, who plays Lovita on The WB's The Steve Harvey Show, and her husband, hip-hop artist Derrick Carolina, 31, are expecting their first child come June. The couple married on New Year's Day 1999.

Dastardly Deed
Grinch-like thieves in Franklin, Tenn., recently hijacked wooden Christmas decorations depicting a Santa Claus, a cow and a choir of carolers from the front lawn of country crooner George Jones, 69. His Yuletide display is a local eyepopper, and annually draws hundreds of sightseers from miles around.
