Fashion diva Joan Rivers in unflattering medical scrubs? Not a chance. In the delivery room while her daughter Melissa, 32, gave birth at a Santa Monica hospital on Dec. 1, "I had on a very simple Armani black suit and a Valentino blouse," reports the 67-year-old comedian. "They kept saying to me, 'Will you put on scrubs?' and I thought, 'Why?' " Likewise, Melissa "made sure her bangs didn't frizz," says the senior Rivers. "It was a very California birth—everyone looked terrific."

Including, of course, the adorably underdressed guest of honor: Edgar Cooper Endicott, the 6-lb. 15-oz. son born to Melissa, who cohosts (with her mother) the annual Oscar and Emmy fashion shows on E! Entertainment Television, and her husband of two years, horse trainer and breeder John Endicott, 34. Edgar Cooper—"It was that or Edgar Elvis," jokes Melissa—"has my big ol' lips," she says, adding that "he looks just like my dad," his namesake, the late Edgar Rosenberg. Says Joan: "It's all about seeing a new life that honors an old life."

Having suffered a miscarriage last year, Melissa, who plans to return to her E! gig in January, says she feels "overwhelmed and overcome" by the arrival of her baby, nicknamed Coop. As for Coop's celebrity granny, who has been camping out at L.A.'s Hotel Bel-Air to be near her new grandson, "She has taken on the role of grandma with gusto," says Melissa. "She sings to him all the time." Confesses Joan: "I'm going to teach him the great scores. I spent all weekend singing him the entire score from Gypsy."
