The People's Choice Awards Jan. 7 marked the start of statuette season—but for some stars, watching each other sizzle would have been reward enough. "You look amazing," ER flirt Erik Palladino teased costar Michael Michele, swathed in a hand-beaded Carolina Herrera striped gown. "My girlfriend," he noted, "is not here tonight."

While some celebs made getting glam look effortless—Julia Roberts donned an understated Gucci pantsuit; Jennifer Aniston chose a Prada dress—a few red-carpet tyros were still working the kinks out of their fashion routines. Ed's Thomas Cavanagh fessed up to having been flummoxed by the French cuffs he wore with his Armani tux. "I'm pathetic," added castmate Julie Bowen, crediting her sister with vetoing a pair of shoes that clashed with her H gold-spangled Christina Perrin dress. "She's an interior designer who has lots of style and she barks at me, 'No, yes, no, yes.' " Better book her now for the Emmys.
