Picks and Pans Review: Signs & Wonders

UPDATED 02/26/2001 at 01:00 AM EST Originally published 02/26/2001 at 01:00 AM EST

Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Rampling, Deborah Kara Unger

A cryptic psychological thriller that grows increasingly dark and diffuse, Signs & Wonders tracks its expatriate protagonist (Skarsgård), an American businessman living in Athens, as he loses his emotional bearings after ditching his wife (Rampling) for a younger coworker (Unger). He returns with Unger to the U.S., then changes his mind and travels back to Athens hoping to patch things up with his ex. Skarsgård and Rampling are both compelling, but director-cowriter Jonathan Nossiter (Sunday) allows his story to wander hither and yon until it literally falls off a cliff. (Not rated)

Bottom Line: This Grecian formula doesn't work
