Picks and Pans Review: Enemy at the Gates

Jude Law, Ed Harris, Rachel Weisz

A partially fact-based drama about a Russian sniper (Law) facing off against his German counterpart (Harris) during the siege of Stalingrad in World War II, Enemy offers the pleasures of a tale tautly told and intense performances by its two talented stars. Things crackle when these two soldiers play their deadly games of cat and mouse; they sag woefully in scenes featuring a cloyingly romantic subplot that serves only as filler between the snipers' duels. Bottom Line: Watchable, but no Saving Private Ryan
