"I am not insane," insists Nell Dysart as she prepares to kidnap a dachshund. "I am reclaiming my life." So goes the flaccid saga of Nell, 42, recently divorced and newly employed by a Columbus, Ohio, detective agency specializing in adultery. Nell is a secretary, but within days she flushes out an embezzler and tidies up the office—achievements of equal standing to her. Intertwined with Nell's sex-and-apartment-hunting saga is a murder mystery involving diamonds, a classic Porsche and a meat locker that hasn't been opened in seven years. The plot points are so obvious they seem to stand up and introduce themselves; too bad we don't see more of Nell's adorable sister-in-law Suze. (St. Martin's, $24.95)
