Some of Hollywood's hottest hunks, including Jude Law, Freddie Prinze Jr. and Alan Gumming, are finding that cooler heads—courtesy of sexy buzz cuts—prevail when it comes to beating the summer heat. "A lot of men are having it done," says London stylist Caron Banfield, "and it looks very attractive." Warm weather aside, Moulin Rouge star Ewan McGregor recently lopped off his locks for a role in an upcoming war movie, while tennis great Patrick Rafter chopped off his trademark ponytail to raise money for a children's charity, declaring, "I had a crew cut until I was about 16, and now I want to go back." A wise choice. Says Manhattan hairstylist John Sahag: "It adds a touch of macho, and that doesn't hurt when you're a guy." Especially since the simple style inspires some touchy situations. "Men love women stroking their head," says Banfield. Before signing on for a clip job, though, take note: A well-shaped noggin is a necessity. "Men look ridiculous if there are indentations on the scalp," Banfield warns. "It can look like someone's taken a shovel to the back of the head."

J. Lo who? Sean "P. Diddy" Combs strutted his stuff big time at the couture shows in Paris last week, making a grand late entrance at Donatella Versace's runway spectacle with a va-va-voom glamazon on his arm. And just in case the City of Lights didn't get the message that Combs was so over Jennifer Lopez, the music mogul and his model date Emma Heming engaged in some serious displays of affection. But the kissy-kissy demo may have been for naught: All anyone could gab about at Donatella's postshow fete was how much like La Lopez Heming looked. ...
It isn't easy being Naomi Campbell. The supermodel thought she had her glad rags together for the Versace happenings, arriving in a slinky black minidress and planning to slip into another Donatella number later. But that plan was foiled when the dazzling diva spotted a Versace couture client wearing the intended party dress. So Campbell dragged date Kevin Spacey back to her hotel, where she donned a backup emerald-green Versace. That left Spacey, a stickler for punctuality, apologizing to Donatella as they arrived late for her shindig....
In London, at Elton John's fund-raising bash, Victoria "Posh Spice" Beckham's mom was overheard insisting what a regular gal her daughter is. Posh herself, however, was across the room pointing to the humongous emerald on her finger and the diamonds in her ears and gloating, "2 million pounds," the price of her bijoux bounty. Very Posh indeed....
Back in Les États-Unis, the girls of American Pie 2, Tara Reid, Shannon Elizabeth and Alyson Hannigan, got a nifty surprise from costar Mena Suvari at their L.A. wrap party: bracelets handmade by Suvari using semiprecious stones like citrine and Peruvian opals. The baubles were such a hit that Suvari is planning to retail them for $50 to $180 under the label Papillon at boutiques all over L.A.

New York City jewelry designer R.J. Graziano knows he got lucky when style icons Catherine Zeta-Jones and Heather Locklear adorned their lobes with his faux coral-and-turquoise chandelier earrings at separate events. "It was one of those flukes of fantasy in fashion," he says, adding that the actresses "are held in high esteem across the world. I was thrilled, and they both looked beautiful." The elegant ear fobs, which retail for $165, were easily up to the match. Says Graziano: "They're wonderfully sexy and alluring."

How fashion savvy is Laura Bush? Just six months into her role as First Lady, she has created a style sensation with the spiffy beach bag she had designer Kate Spade create as an official protocol gift. "We were absolutely flattered," says a Spade spokeswoman. Unavailable in stores, the navy canvas tote, about 18 in. by 13 in. and emblazoned with "The White House," has already been bestowed on Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and on a Slovenian diplomat's wife; 17 have been ordered for the First Lady's staff, and arrangements are being made for them to purchase others. Says press secretary Noelia Rodriguez: "This is the first time the East Wing will be the envy of the West Wing."
The gift tote is based on a larger $235 design.
