Jay and Silent Bob are a couple of hard-core stoners who briefly graced director and screenwriter Kevin Smith's four previous movies. The two finally get starring roles in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, a film that's one big, self-referential in-joke. Only fitfully funny, it's most notable for amusing cameos by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and for spoofing other recent movies.
The plot has Jay (Mewes) and Bob (Smith) trying to halt production of a movie about them. Why? So that nerdy kids won't criticize the film on the Internet. As one of these netizens has already astutely pointed out, "These two only work in small doses. They don't deserve their own movie." Bingo. (R)
