Mad Caps
Extra, extra! Newsboy caps have become fashion headliners, and smart lookers like Matthew Broderick, Janet Jackson and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos are flipping over the chic chapeaus. The soft, pinched-brim style is "an easy hat to wear," says mod Manhattan milliner Selima Salaun, whose hats are a favorite of Demi Moore, Drew Barrymore and Liv Tyler. "It gives you a naughty and stylish look at the same time."
Perfect to cap off any outfit, the unisex flattops are "a cute way of getting attention," says L.A. stylist Cary Fetman. K-PAX's Aaron Paul turned heads when he donned his black cotton newsboy for a recent film premiere. "People were saying it's a great hat," he says.
Very versatile, the hat "looks great with dresses or with a men's suit," notes New York City stylist Patti Wilson, who selected a leather Gucci newsboy cap for singer Alicia Keys. "It makes a good ending."
The haute headgear also serves a more practical purpose. "It's good for a bad-hair day," says Salaun. Even better, says Paul, the hip style "makes me look cooler than I actually am."

When producers of the upcoming Dana Carvey comedy Master of Disguise asked Bo Derek to appear as herself, lampooning her sex-symbol image, the star jumped at the chance, even though it meant sitting for eight hours while stylists recreated the famed cornrow braids from her 1979 film 10. "It's suicide, that's what it is," she says with a laugh of the lengthy process. But sipping green tea and gabbing with the three girls who simultaneously entwined her tresses at BLACKS' Hair & more... salon in L.A. got the actress through. And Derek was perked up by how much easier it is these days to maintain the look. "There's a special gel for braids now to keep the frizzies under control," she reports. "When I did 10, I had to use Elmer's Glue." ...
Cruising to the Emmys, Sex and the City's Kristin Davis suddenly urged her limo driver to pull over. A case of motion sickness? Not at all. Before Davis left home, her makeup artist had given the actress strict touch-up instructions to use before hitting the red carpet. "The driver was going too fast," she says. "I had to touch up my lip gloss, dab my face with blotting paper and prevent my eye shadow from smudging by using Q-tips. Try doing that during a sharp turn." ...
Closet-clearing alert: Celebs including Oprah Winfrey, Rosie O'Donnell and Courteney Cox Arquette Arquette donated suits for an online auction that begins Nov. 12 on uBid.com to benefit the Women's Alliance, a nonprofit group aiding women in transition from welfare to work. O'Donnell coughed up 20 pieces, including a spiffy char-coal-hued Brian Bailey wool trouser suit, while Winfrey handed over a baby-blue-and-white Richard Metzger ensemble that she wore on her show....
Oh, the power of being Liv Tyler. When she strolled into the New York City vintage boutique Foley & Corinna not too long ago, the actress admired the $120 puffy-sleeved cotton frock by L.A. designer Heza that store manager Keegan Shea was wearing. Eager to please, the shopkeep slipped out of it and gave the item to the star....

Lots of lace and leg made for va-voom entrances for Jennifer Lopez and Britney Spears, who chose similarly sultry Dolce & Gabbana dresses for recent events. J.Lo donned a Venetian lace version, while Spears opted for Chantilly months later. "Lace," says the design duo, is "a softer approach to sexiness."

Tiger Woods took a fresh swing at style by sporting a mustache-goatee combo at last week's PGA Championship. But his new hirsuteness failed to score with fans. "It didn't do anything for his looks," says one. "And," noting Woods's 14th-place finish, "it did nothing for his game."
