Picks and Pans Review: The Seventh Stream
CBS (Sun., Dec. 9, 9 p.m. ET)
A fisherman falls for a seal in this Hallmark Hall of Fame production, but don't expect a kinky comedy. It's a moody tale of love and sacrifice filmed on Ireland's rugged west coast.
Fortunately the seal turns into a beautiful woman (Saffron Burrows from the movie Circle of Friends) before entering the lonely world of widower Owen Quinn (played by a stoic Scott Glenn). Owen calls her Mairead (meaning pearl), and she brings much-needed warmth to his home—as well as magically increasing his haul from the sea. But Mairead's time in human form is limited, and eventually she and Owen face a heart-rending decision.
The drama tarries too long before reaching its poignant resolution, and the script is not free of Irish clichés (like the old expert on legends who's wont to start sentences with " 'Tis said..."). Nonetheless, the emotions of The Seventh Stream run deep.
Bottom Line: Seal of approval
