NBC (Tuesdays, 8 p.m. ET)
An Emmy winner for both drama (Tuesdays with Morrie) and comedy (various voices on The Simpsons), Hank Azaria should have a showcase for his versatility in this new sitcom. The talented actor portrays TV comedy writer Josh Miller plus figures from Josh's active fantasy life.
Sadly, the Jan. 8 pilot lets Azaria play only one figment of Josh's imagination: a crude therapist who talks like a Sopranos reject. The rest of the half hour is belabored sex jokes and trite office situations. The series has familiar faces—Jayne Brook (Chicago Hope) as Josh's wife; Joshua Malina (Sports Night) as his partner; Katey Sagal (Married...with Children) as his boss—but more surprises are what we want.
Bottom Line: Short on real laughs
