Every weekday afternoon on MTV's Total Request Live, Carson Daly proves he's adept at maintaining his equilibrium in a roomful of screaming teens. This is not an inconsiderable skill, but it doesn't necessarily suit him to be the host of an NBC talk show in the relative quiet of the wee hours. In the first two weeks of the half-hour Last Call, during which he persistently joshed Gwyneth Paltrow about her wild side and took pains to thank paroled rap mogul Suge Knight for being nice and polite, Daly gave no sign that he's particularly funny, well-prepared or articulate. ("My guest tomorrow night is Suge Knight," he told Paltrow. "Any thoughts on that?" She had none to speak of.) On the plus side Daly establishes a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere far from TRL's madding crowd.
Bottom Line: No call for rejoicing
