by Charles Webb
Webb's 1963 novel The Graduate—the basis for the classic 1967 movie—surveyed the generation gap. The reclusive author's first book in more than two decades inspects another culture clash: Limeys vs. Yanks. English artist Colin Ware, a reticent romantic, hops the pond for the first time to recover from a love affair seemingly gone awry. He drifts to New Cardiff, Vt., where he falls for an American nursing-home aide named Mandy. She's as sweet as maple syrup, but she's nearly as slow. Told almost exclusively in dialogue, this offbeat romantic comedy, which is being made into a film due this fall starring Colin Firth and Heather Graham, is as light as a feather; you'll be tickled.
