Picks and Pans Review: New Cardiff

by Charles Webb

Webb's 1963 novel The Graduate—the basis for the classic 1967 movie—surveyed the generation gap. The reclusive author's first book in more than two decades inspects another culture clash: Limeys vs. Yanks. English artist Colin Ware, a reticent romantic, hops the pond for the first time to recover from a love affair seemingly gone awry. He drifts to New Cardiff, Vt., where he falls for an American nursing-home aide named Mandy. She's as sweet as maple syrup, but she's nearly as slow. Told almost exclusively in dialogue, this offbeat romantic comedy, which is being made into a film due this fall starring Colin Firth and Heather Graham, is as light as a feather; you'll be tickled. (Washington Square, $14)

Bottom Line: Here's to you, Mr. Webb
