Mandy Moore: Pop Singer

How does a teen star stand out from the midriff-baring pack? If you're Mandy Moore, you become a bottle brunette. Since dyeing her naturally blonde hair brown last year for her starring role in the surprise box office hit A Walk to Remember, Moore, 18, feels "more confident," she says. "I look at pictures of myself with blonde hair and cringe." Going against the glamor grain comes naturally to Moore, who insists "it's only human not to wear makeup." It was her unvarnished innocence that led director Adam Shankman to pursue her for Walk. "She has that incredible, open young face," he says. "She doesn't put across the whole sex thing." Unattached since breaking up with Wilmer Valderrama (That '70s Show) last winter, the 5'10" Moore shuttles between an L.A. condo and the Orlando home where her homemaker mom, Stacy, 45, pilot dad, Don, 45; and brothers Scott, 22, and Kyle, 16, still live. "She was a cute kid, not stunning," Stacy says. "But I look at her now and wonder, 'What happened to my baby girl?' "
