Picks and Pans Review: If Looks Could Kill

By Kate White

Who tried to kill Gloss magazine editor Cat Jones with a poisoned box of Godiva chocolates? The file of potential suspects is thicker than a fashion monthly's September issue: jealous rivals, disgruntled underlings, her shagadelic fashion-photographer husband. The cutthroat world of women's magazines is an inspired setting for a murder mystery, and White, Cosmopolitan's editor-in-chief, shows she has the plot-spinning skills and self-mocking sense of humor for the task in this breezy first novel. As Gloss crime writer Bailey Weggins investigates the death of Cat's young nanny, who apparently binged on deadly sweets meant for her employer, White's knowing references to pink pashminas, toe cleavage and "chubby checking" (making sure a potential movie-star cover girl hasn't gained weight lately) add insider zing to a charmingly old-fashioned detective yarn. (Warner, $22.95)

Bottom Line: Nancy Drew turned Cosmo girl
