Dee Dee Ramone, 50, the bassist and cofounder of the Ramones, the pioneering punk rock group that burst onto the New York City club scene in 1974, died of an apparent drug overdose on June 5 in L.A. Ramone, born Douglas Glen Colvin, who wrote many of the influential band's hits, including "Teenage Lobotomy," had long struggled with drug and alcohol abuse....

Award-winning columnist and author Caroline Knapp, 42, whose best-selling 1996 memoir, Drinking: A Love Story, was lauded for its insightful descriptions of life as a high-functioning alcoholic, died of complications from lung cancer on June 3 in Cambridge, Mass.

Five-time Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg, 46, wed Patricia Ostfeldt, 32, a real estate broker, on June 8 near Stockholm. It's the third marriage for the former tennis star, who retired in '83....

Singer Natalie Appleton, 29, of the defunct girl group All Saints, and Liam Howlett, 31, a member of the techno dance band Prodigy, were married on June 7 in Les Adrets, France.

Settled
The Manhattan trial in which film director Woody Allen, 66, accused his longtime producers Jean Doumanian, 67, and Jacqui Safra, 54, of cheating him out of more than $10 million in movie profits (PEOPLE, May 27, 2002), ended on June 11 with a confidential settlement between the two sides.

Sued
Aspiring actress Linda Marie Sanchez, 28, filed a paternity suit in New York City on June 3, alleging that rapper and actor Ice-T (Law & Order: SVU), 44, is the father of her 8-month-old son Kevin. Sanchez is seeking at least 17 percent of Ice-T's gross adjusted income. The rapper, whose real name is Tracy Marrow, refused to comment.

Update

On June 7 in Fleming-ton, N.J., former NBA star Jayson Williams, 34, pleaded not guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the February slaying of a limo driver at Williams's sprawling New Jersey estate (People, March 11, 2002). Williams, who is free on $270,000 bail, could face nearly 45 years in prison if convicted of this and other, lesser charges....

Martin Burnham, 42, a missionary from Kansas who had been held hostage in the Philippines jungle by a Muslim extremist group for more than a year (PEOPLE, May 6, 2002), was shot to death on June 7 during a failed rescue attempt by the Philippine army....

A Miami judge ruled on June 5 that misdemeanor drug charges against Dionne Warwick, 61, will be dropped. The singer, who was arrested at Miami International Airport on May 12 for possession of 11 suspected marijuana cigarettes (People, May 27, 2002), is required to make an antidrug public service ad.
