Picks and Pans Review: Her Father's House

By Belva Plain

Falling in love creates a problem for Donald, a gifted young New York City lawyer whose new wife, Lillian, is a stunning beauty, a vivacious bon vivant and an occasional sociopath. His solution? Try to make the best of it. When that fails, he snatches their daughter and heads for Georgia.

Donald's transformation from big-city hotshot to fugitive is the best part of the novel. The dialogue bears no resemblance to the way people actually speak, but Plain's sensitive portrayal of Donald, along with a twist-filled conclusion, make this House worth a visit. (Delacorte, $25.95)

Bottom Line: Just plain solid
