Donald's transformation from big-city hotshot to fugitive is the best part of the novel. The dialogue bears no resemblance to the way people actually speak, but Plain's sensitive portrayal of Donald, along with a twist-filled conclusion, make this House worth a visit. (Delacorte, $25.95)
