When Melanie Griffith's 17-year-old son Alexander went to get his first tattoo Aug. 24, Mom was right there beside him at Tattoo Mania on L.A.'s Sunset Blvd. Melanie had her manicurist meet her there, and while Alexander had a Chinese symbol for truth etched on his back, she had her nails done.

Mega-star wedding planner Mindy Weiss likes to give clever wedding gifts to her clients. Weiss, who is planning Gwen Stefani's upcoming L.A. wedding to Bush singer Gavin Rossdale, gave the rocker diva (among other things) a custom-blended (and scented) lip gloss kit by Beverly Hills makeup artist Bobbe Joy. The $45 six-color kit, called Heavy Metal, includes such hues as Ozzy Osmium, Guns n' Rhodium, Alice Copper and Zinc Floyd.

Girl group gridlock? At the recent Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in Pasadena, R&B clones of Destiny's Child abounded. "I am so flattered," says Tina Knowles, DC stylist and sometime designer (and Beyoncé's mom). But the copycats will have to be fast on their feet. "Destiny's Child is older now," says Knowles, "so they're changing their style—to a more sophisticated couture look."
