A real babe magnet: Although he's costarring with his sweetheart Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck cuddled with someone else on the Philadelphia set of Jersey Girl—an infant handed to him between takes by a fan. At least it was research—the romantic comedy pairs Lopez and Affleck as newlyweds with a newborn.
Higher powered: Man of the flower Jim Carrey had his hands full on the L.A. set of Bruce Almighty when he gave a bouquet (left) and a boost (below) to his celluloid girlfriend Jennifer Aniston. In the comedy, due next summer, Carrey plays a disgruntled TV newscaster whose constant grousing leads God to let him run the universe for a day.
Venice, anyone? In an annual end-of-summer migration, celebs flocked to Italy for the 59the Venice Film Festival. "It's good to broaden your vision of the world," observed Gwyneth Paltrow (left), who racked up plenty of roaming charges while strolling the Italian city. Tom Hanks (below right), who presented his Mob drama Road to Perdition at the fest, opted to glide in a gondole, while Calista Flockhart (below left) lent a hand—make that two—to support her sweetie Harrison Ford, there to promote his submarine flick K-19: The Widowmaker.
A nose for winners: 10-month-old Jaden Gil Agassi netted some face time with mom Steffi Graf at the U.S. Open, where they watched dad Andre Agassi beat Jan-Michael Gambill 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Simon says lie down: Though many would love to muzzle American Idol judge Simon Cowell, the merciless critic found a receptive audience in two German shepherds lounging on Rodeo Drive during a shopping trip in Beverly Hills.
Goal rush: Devoted New York Giants fan Jon Bon Jovi took a handoff from his team's quarterback Kerry Collins at the Meadowlands in New Jersey. The rocker was set to kick off pigskin season with a special Sept. 5 NFL concert in New York City's Times Square.
With surfboard almost in hand, a sporty Shannen Doherty readied herself for a board walk at L.A.'s LAX airport. The once Charmed actress and her hubby, boxer Richard Salomon, were headed to Costa Careyes, Mexico, to catch some waves—and the wedding of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. (see page 76). Doherty will host Scare Tactics, a new reality game show, on the Sci-Fi Channel this fall.
