Picks and Pans Review: Nightline

After 22 years on the air, this news institution had a near-death experience when ABC executives tried to lure David Letterman away from CBS and place him in Ted Koppel's latenight slot. But Letterman wisely stayed put and Nightline continued to provide its distinctive brand of thoughtful reporting and probing interviews. Koppel even got an additional half hour, Nightline UpClose, for more informal conversations. Unfortunately, that program gives way to Jimmy Kimmel's post-midnight comedy entry in January.
