Looks like this is the summer for girls to go frill seeking. Bold patterns (Eva Amurri, Molly Sims), floaty fabrics (Lucy Liu) and ruffly layers (Connie Nielsen) make this latest crop of tiered dresses "playful, feminine and flirtatious," says designer Jill Stuart. "They're for women who want to have fun." And while a model figure isn't necessary, a keen eye will help you avoid maximizing what you would rather play down. "Just be aware of where the ruffles fall on your body," advises stylist Ricci DeMartino. And be ready for the endorphin high when you kick up those killer heels.
Frills for all seasons?
Demi Moore and Sarah Jessica Parker are on top—and ahead—of the trend, in dresses and velvet jackets from Tom Ford for YSL's Fall 2003 collection. So maybe the ruffly stuff isn't just a summer fling....

At the Southampton, N.Y., premiere of Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde, Michael Michele's ensemble seemed inspired by the movie's moniker. With blonde highlights, she went with a Jenne Maag top and Rubin Chapelle pants and then added red Manolos—and scarlet lips. Taking fashion cues from a film title? Elle Woods would approve.
ISLAND GIRLS: Nope, it's not a summer cocktail, but stars including Julia Roberts, Jennifer Garner and Charlize Theron are intoxicated by a heady spritzer called Kai Body Glow. Created by Gaye Straza Rappaport, who has spent time in Hawaii, the hydrating mist ($28 at www.kaifragrance.com) is scented with exotics like gardenia and leaves a sexy shimmer on the skin. We'll have ours straight up....
SPANKING NEW: Confidential to fans of over-the-top pop tart Christina Aguilera: The dominatrix-style footwear that she wears on her current tour will be in stores Sept. 30. Designed by Chai Vasquez and customized with Aguilera's help, the looks include the Whipaspank boot in red leather with white stars and a wedge-heeled sneaker. Look for the limited-edition footwear from C Label Shoes at select Nordstrom's (and proceed at your own risk)....
Want this look? Customized by Christina Aguilera, her Whipaspank boots retail for $190.
ZODIAC THRILLER: Seems Demi Moore is sweet on more than just Ashton: She's also this close to the diamond Scorpio-sign necklace that her character wears in Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. Designed by Ron Hami, the white-gold necklace was bought for Moore (a Scorpio herself) by stylist B.J.Rogers. Hami (the creator of a complete Zodiac collection) says that each symbol "makes for a beautiful design that everybody can relate to." L.A. folks sure get the vibe: Check the décolletage of Britney Spears and Eve. Guess that's why they're called star signs....
Zodiac collection, $1,450 to $1,850, from neimanmarcus.com
Instead of sunning (so passé!), stars like Lucy Liu and Christina Applegate are using bronzer to go for a summer glow—sweeping color from forehead to chin and leaving the rest of the face almost nude. Perfect for age-resistant celebs...plus, says Heidi Klum, "Who has time to sit on the beach and get a tan?"
Guerlain Terracotta Moisturizing Bronzing Powder (Klum's choice), $32.50.
Avon beComing Blush and Highlighter in Bronzer, $14.
I really LOVE my...
Hermès cuff bracelet. On a worldwide press tour for Charlie's Angels, Cameron Diaz went Full Throttle with her studded leather bracelet—switching from sporty in Australia to polished at the L.A. premiere to boho sexy on The Tonight Show. Clearly, the $680 bauble is earning its keep—and it's chic enough to rate as a contender for best supporting accessory.
