Mod for You

Marley Shelton's mod motto? If the do fits, work it. Since trading her shoulder-length hair for a pixie cut a few months ago, the 29-year-old actress has been feeling groovy—and dressing the part. "I've been really playing with this Mia Farrow, Edie Sedgwick kind of throwback look," she says. "I've found that I've been leaning toward the feminine in terms of how I dress, wearing more skirts, a lot more makeup and a lot more jewelry." Unlike the uptight, buttoned-down character she plays in this month's Uptown Girls, Shelton is not one to blend into the scenery. Her own style, she admits, is "all over the map. I go from grungy rocker chic to streamlined, classic looks. I definitely dress for my mood." At the 1920s Spanish-style Hollywood Hills home she shares with her husband of two years, producer Beau Flynn (Tigerland, Requiem for a Dream), that usually means laid-back and comfortable. Whether she's hiking with their bullmastiffs Jackson and Bella or puttering in the backyard, she says, "I wear cargo pants and tank tops and Juicy sweat suits." But when her mood turns mod, Shelton easily slips into a '60s state of mind. "I love paying homage to this era because it looked into the future, and I think that's such a great spirit," she says. "It's funny: It's vintage and forward-thinking at the same time."
