Actress Kate Winslet, 27, and Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty), 38, are expecting their first child in January. Winslet has a 2-year-old daughter, Mia, from her previous marriage to director Jim Threapleton.
Actress Countess Vaughn (The Parkers), 25, and her husband, Joseph James, 32, welcomed 6-lb. Jaylen Dushone on July 9 in Los Angeles. He is their first child.
Michael "Nicko" McBrain, 51, drummer for the heavy metal band Iron Maiden, was charged with assault and reckless endangerment on July 27 after hitting a parking attendant with his car before performing at the Jones Beach Theatre in Wantagh, N.Y. According to police, McBrain became angry when the attendant requested ID from McBrain. The drummer then drove his Jaguar into the attendant, injuring the man's right hand. McBrain could not be reached for comment.
The Wilhelmina Artist Management agency filed a suit in Manhattan on June 27 against rapper Eve and her manager Troy Carter, alleging that the duo owe the company money from endorsement contracts with Reebok and Candie's. Eve, 24, left Wilhelmina late last year, but the agency claims it initiated those deals before the split. A rep for the star said they didn't know about the suit....
On July 28 actress Diane Lane (Unfaithful), 38, sued Intermedia Film Equities USA for nearly $2.7 million, claiming the production company failed to finance the film Me Again, in which she was slated to star opposite Bruce Willis. In addition, Lane says Intermedia agreed to pay her a fee of $3.5 million regardless of whether or not the movie was made but has only paid her $833,333. A rep for Intermedia says, "We do not comment on pending litigation."
Music legend Ray Charles, 72, is undergoing treatment in Los Angeles for acute hip pain, forcing the Grammy winner to cancel 14 upcoming concert dates. A spokesman says the singer is expected to resume his schedule on Aug. 22.
On July 27 in Baylor, Texas, police identified a badly decomposed body as that of Baylor University basketball player Patrick Dennehy, 21, who had been missing since mid-June (PEOPLE, Aug. 4, 2003). Dennehy's ex-teammate Carlton Dotson, 21, was arrested on suspicion of murder on July 21. A cause of death has yet to be determined.
Oscar-winning director John Schlesinger, 77, died on July 25 in Palm Springs., Calif., of complications from a stroke he suffered in December 2000. The British filmmaker made his American debut with 1969's Midnight Cowboy, the only X-rated movie to win a Best Picture Oscar. Schlesinger directed over 20 films, including 1971's Sunday Bloody Sunday....
Former Iron Butterfly lead guitarist Erik Braunn, 52, died of a heart attack on July 25 in L.A. The acid rock band was best known for its 1968 anthem "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida."
