FRUIT PUNCH
Time was when cool celebs were divided into two distinct camps: those who wore black all the time, and those who wore black most of the time. Now, thanks to the sudden popularity of citrus colors, stars including Elizabeth Hurley, Lisa Marie Presley and Murphy Brown's Faith Ford are popping up in an eye-catching array of oranges, lemons and limes. "With these colors, you don't have to worry about not standing, out in a crowd," says model and MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes, who donned a lime-green Armani gown for the Oscars. "Don't let anyone tell you otherwise—anyone wearing bright colors loves the attention."
Juicing up everything from patent-leather handbags to Hush Puppies, citrus hues, says designer Nicole Miller, are "less vampy than black and sexy in a much more subtle way." And after years in exile, the colors were due for a comeback. "I basically go by the 'what's missing in a woman's closet theory,' " says designer Betsey Johnson, whose clients include Alicia Silverstone, Courtney Love and Isabella Rossellini. "You can't get girls to buy shapes and colors that they already own." But unlike black—beloved because it goes with just about anything just about anywhere—colors plucked from the produce aisle are not for everyone. "They're daring to wear," says Fuentes. "It takes guts to walk around looking like a key lime pie."
