Picks and Pans Review: Greater Need

Lorrie Morgan

While Reba McEntire rules at country music's award nights, perennial runnerup Lorrie Morgan more than holds her own at the cash register (four platinum albums and 15 Top 10 singles). Avoiding the showy vocal gymnastics of her aforementioned competition, Morgan delivers her tunes with straight-on, tough-talking honesty. She's particularly adept with ballads, and Need is chock-full of 'em—from the we-need-to-talk urgency of "I Can Buy My Own Roses" to the bitter defiance of "Good As I Was to You" to the wistful title tune. And lest we forget, Morgan, who started at the Grand Ole Opry at age 13 (with her dad, country star George Morgan, in the wings), displays her hard-core roots on the chugging honky-tonker "Don't Stop in My World." Her mantel may not be filling up with statuettes, but Greater Need keeps Morgan planted firmly in the big leagues. (BNA)
