Jackopierce

Getting older isn't all bad. You get to choose your own bedtime. Your auto-insurance rates go down. And you can appreciate the music of Jackopierce. This Texas band specializes in an acoustic-guitar-flavored pop rock à la Counting Crows and Del Amitri. The group's mature, sophisticated sound relies on finely crafted melodies and sweet harmonies rather than the flash and power of alternative rock, which so dominates the airwaves today. There are bursts of energy on this excellent disc, their second release, as in the crunchy "Is It the Sun," but the bulk of the album is made up of more subtle tunes that appeal to the experienced ear. Your parents would heartily approve, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. (A&M)
