Picks and Pans Review: Ridiculous

Squeeze

This year marks Squeeze's 22nd anniversary as a band and, as with many acts that have remained together that long (Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, Elton John), the creative tank is Hearing empty. While Glenn Tilbrook's velour voice remains one of the most enchanting in pop music, the songs on this disc just don't compare with the band's efforts in the early-to mid-'80s. There is the predictable array of toe-tappers and ballads, but most of these 14 songs simply plod along, musically and lyrically. Still, there are glimmers of the glory days in the soulful "I Want You" and in "Temptation for Love," an exquisite duet by Tilbrook and guest singer Cathy Dennis. If only they could have squeezed out a few more. (IRS)
