Picks and Pans Review: The Nutty Professor

Eddie Murphy, Jada Pinkett

Eddie Murphy has a blast here, something he hasn't had much of while zombie-walking through his last few films. And when Murphy has fun, we have fun. This remake of a 1963 Jerry Lewis comedy, pumped up with a new fat-guy twist (see box below), stars Murphy as an obese, nerdy science prof who, after gulping a potion, becomes a slim hipster. Nutty's not Jane Austen, but it is funny in its own raucous, raunchy way. And if one Murphy is a hoot, try five, which is what you get in hilarious scenes where he plays his prof's equally beefy mom, dad, brother and grandma. (Warning for those with delicate sensibilities: I haven't heard as many flatulence jokes since talking with my 7-year-old niece.) (PG-13)
