Picks and Pans Review: The Real World

MTV (season premiere, Wed., July 10, 10 p.m ET)

The British band Pulp has a great song called "Common People," which pokes fun at bright young things who like to masquerade as working-class people. Pulp might have been referring to this series. Seven real people—all smug, insufferable twentysomethings—share a spectacular house in Miami's South Beach provided by MTV and try to start a business together. The Real World is an insult to anyone who lives in the real world.
