IT MAY HAVE BEEN FOR A GOOD CAUSE, BUT THE SEVENTH ANNUAL FIRE AND ICE Ball—an A-list gathering that raised $3.5 million for the Revlon/UCLA Women's Cancer Research Program—had the sort of spark rarely seen on Hollywood's rubber-poulet circuit. Headlined by Bette Midler and held on the set of Batman & Robin, the Oct. 17 fete had the feeling of a glamorous carnival. Ball-goers in Galliano and Richard Tyler mingled among fiberglass glaciers and a towering dinosaur. The Divine Miss M lobbed joke after raunchy joke as the audience of 1,100 roared. After the roast chicken, Midler sang a spoof of "Everything's Coming Up Roses," then plunged into the audience in search of Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton, her First Wives costars. Although Hawn was there to receive a hug, Keaton had split. "What the hell is the matter with her?" Midler yelped in mock outrage. "This bitch left me holding the bag!" Aside from Midler, the biggest entertainment was table-hopping. Newsiest sighting: "Riddler" Jim Carrey and new wife Lauren Holly, who admitted that—unlike America's other famous newlyweds—they had had no honeymoon. But this being Hollywood, that was just the setup: "You know where we're going?" asked Carrey. "Turkey!"
