WHATEVER ARGENTINA MIGHT HAVE BEEN THINKING, there was no crying for Senora Perón—and certainly not for Madonna—at the Dec. 14 Los Angeles premiere of Evita, which grossed a record-breaking one-day total of $71,308 on just two screens Christmas Day. Decked out in a retro-velvet confection by John Galliano with matching '40s headdress and a replica of the diamond ring Evita wore, Madonna—accompanied by her live-in boyfriend Carlos Leon—strode into the Shrine Auditorium as a mob of fans chanted, "Viva Madonna." Striking her best Evita pose, she raised her arms and waved. "Madonna has an incredible gift for reinventing herself," marveled Glenn Close, who attended the premiere. Afterward, celebrity guests, including Marisa Tomei, ER's Julianna Margulies and Melanie Griffith partied at a nearby warehouse. Less than an hour after she arrived, the reinvented Madonna, left for home to be with her 3-month-old baby, Lourdes. Still, she had made her mark. "No one could upstage Madonna," gushed MTV's Jenny McCarthy. "She could show up wearing a potato sack and still amaze everybody." But let's not give her ideas.
