After his success in Evita, actor Antonio Banderas is considering a second career as a singer. At the suggestion of Madonna
's manager Freddy De-Mann, Banderas recently met with Grammy-winning producer David Foster about a possible record deal. "He's got a real good voice, and he says he's interested in recording," Foster tells me. "We had one preliminary meeting, with more scheduled." If Banderas decides to make an album, Foster's 143 Records label and Madonna
's company, Maverick Records, will both be involved....
Speaking of Madonna
, the Evita star got right down to basics with Gwyneth Paltrow
at Disney's party following the Golden Globes awards (see page 46). "So when are you going to get pregnant?" Madonna
asked the Emma star upon being introduced. Paltrow, who became engaged to Brad Pitt
in December but has yet to set a wedding date, replied, "I don't know. Maybe in a year and a half." Madonna
, casting a knowing glance at her own beau Carlos Leon, warned Paltrow, "It will definitely happen when you least expect it."...
More Golden Globes: Halfway through the awards, I overheard Mira Sorvino dressing down her boyfriend, director Quentin Tarantino, near the ladies loo in the Beverly Hilton's ballroom. She complained that his late arrival forced her to walk solo down the long, paparazzi-flanked red carpet before the show's start. By night's end, though, the two had patched things up and were cozy at the Miramax party....
Final Global spin: For my money, the hottest party following the awards was the Creative Artists Agency's bash at Muse, a trendy L.A. restaurant. Guests included Paltrow, Tom Cruise
and Nicole Kidman
, Demi Moore
and Bruce Willis
, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan, John Travolta and Kelly Preston, The English Patient's Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes, and Leonardo DiCaprio
. Cruise told me at Muse that the tone of his introductory speech for his Rain Man costar and pal Dustin Hoffman's lifetime achievement award was so important to him that he actually wrote most of it himself....
At last, those attractive twentysomethings on Melrose Place can get some peace. Marcia Cross, who plays the emotionally disturbed Kimberly Shaw, is leaving the show in March to pursue other projects. I'm told her character, who already has a brain tumor, will die. Hmm. Does this medical condition explain all her evil acts over the past several seasons?....
Woody Allen tells us he had to cut five musical numbers out of Everyone Says I Love You to get the movie down to its 98-minute length. The cut was particularly painful for Tracey Ullman, whose entire role disappeared, including her two songs. Allen says he hated sacrificing Ullman, who was also in his Bullets Over Broadway, "but I had to because the film was too long." The British actress was obviously disappointed, but she isn't making any comment about it....
The big event is just a month away: Michael Jackson Jr. is due to enter the world on Feb. 27. That's what I'm hearing from a source close to singer Michael Jackson and his bride, Debbie Rowe. And, yes, it's a boy, and Michael Jr. is the name the expectant parents have chosen. I guess that on Feb. 27 Michael Sr. will have another reason to wear one of those silly surgical masks.
