Rocker Melissa Etheridge's longtime companion, filmmaker Julie Cypher, 32, gave birth to an 8-lb., 10-oz. daughter, Bailey Jean Cypher, on Feb. 10 in Los Angeles. The couple have not released any information concerning how the child was conceived. Etheridge, 35, had filed suit previously, on Feb. 5, in Los Angeles against her former tour manager Ulrich Peretz, 42, seeking $500,000 in compensatory damages and a court order to stop him from selling and publicizing personal information about her. Etheridge, who fired Peretz last year, claims he has threatened to break a confidentiality agreement that he entered into in 1989.

ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings, 58, and 20/20 producer Kayce Freed are engaged. No date has been set for the wedding, which will be the first for Freed, who is in her mid-30s, according to an ABC spokesman, and the fourth for Jennings, who has two teenage children from his marriage to writer Kati Marton.
Paul Ward, 32, was charged Feb. 4 with the murder of investigative reporter Veronica Guerin, 36, last June in Dublin (PEOPLE, July 22, 1996). Guerin, married and the mother of a 7-year-old son, had been hailed for exposés of Dublin's powerful drug lords. She was shot five times by a man on a motorcycle as she sat in her car at a traffic light.
Gospel star and Grammy winner Ronald Winans, 40, underwent 14 hours of heart surgery on Feb. 8 at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor to repair damage suffered in an undetected heart attack five months ago. He was in fair condition at press time.
