Rachel: A Star Is Scorned
Wedding Crashers star Rachel McAdams found out early how tough show business can be. "I always wanted to be on Star Search or be a Broadway star, so I went to the Disney camp when I was 12," says McAdams, 28, currently costarring in the comedy with Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Immediately, she felt out of her depth. "There were all these kids singing and dancing—they were all the next Annie. I just cried every day. It was so awful. I don't know what I was thinking." Apparently the camp counselors didn't, either. "The director came up to me and said, 'Maybe you'd be happier in the Shakespeare group,'" recalls McAdams. "I said, 'I can't do Shakespeare.' So he says, 'Well, you can't sing or dance, either!'"
Kid Rock Gets Caught
Kid Rock isn't part of country duo Big & Rich's posse of Nashville musicians known as the MuzikMafia, but he still felt the need to defend their honor. "A deejay made a smart-aleck comment about us at a club, and [Kid] let the guy know he didn't like it," says John Rich, 31, of Rock's punching a deejay last February. (He pleaded no contest to criminal assault in June.) "Then we got into my Corvette and took off for my house." The police found them the next morning. "By the time [the police tracked us], it was 7:30 a.m., and [Kid] was asleep on the floor with his hat over his face," says Rich, who is appearing in CMA Music Festival: Country Music's Biggest Party Aug. 2 on ABC. "I told him, 'Your ride's here.' He got up, lit a cigar, grabbed a [beer], walked outside and said, 'Hello, boys.' Then they took him to jail. It was Bo and Luke Duke all the way."
Billy Bob: Bravo Angelina
"Any kid Angelina adopts is going to have a great mother," says Angelina Jolie's ex Billy Bob Thornton, 50, of her July adoption of an Ethiopian baby named Zahara Marley. "I love it. I knew for a while she was going to adopt. She cares so much for kids who don't have anything." But Jolie's constant travels mean that Thornton, who adopted Maddox, 4, with her when they were still married in 2002, doesn't get to see mother and son much. "She's all over the world and I live in California," says Thornton. "I see them every time she comes to town, but that hasn't been very often in the last couple of years." And what of Brad Pitt's presence at the adoption? Says Thornton: "Nothing surprises me."
Metcalfe: No More Meat Market
Although he's known as the hunky gardener on Desperate Housewives, Jesse Metcalfe wants acclaim for his body of work, not his body. "I'm leery of being typecast as eye candy. My next role will be a little deeper and won't require me to take my shirt off in every scene," says Metcalfe, 26. "I'm not complaining, but want to have a long career." Another role the actor doesn't want to get stuck playing? The single guy. "I'm getting older and tiring of the bachelor lifestyle," says Metcalfe. "I'd like to meet a nice girl
and leave all those. [hottest] bachelor lists behind."
