INTRODUCING Monica Ramirez
CLAIM TO FAME: A former pageant queen who filled a void in the Latina market with Zalia Cosmetics
ROOTS: A first-generation New Yorker by way of Peru
CELEB CLIENTS: Rosario Dawson, Marc Anthony
Zalia products $12.50-$26.50, www. zalia.com
As a makeup artist and onetime model, Monica Ramirez was tired of mixing products to complement her skin. "Latinas tend to have more of a yellow or olive undertone," explains Ramirez, 32. "Mainstream pink-based products look unhealthy and false." So in 2001 she founded Zalia, a line of cosmetics for Latina women. At first only available in two New York beauty salons, today Zalia is in department stores and for sale online. Ramirez, who has worked with Rosario Dawson and singer Reina, is now developing skin-care and fragrance lines. Her greatest pleasures, though, are working with Hispanic nonprofits, she says, and "speaking about makeup to Latina women who say, 'Finally, someone's thinking about us.' "
Diane von Furstenberg opened her third U.S. store Sept. 29 on Melrose Place in Los Angeles. Celebs were on hand to rap about one of their favorite designers.
I can actually wear her clothes and not alter anything. I like the movement of them and—I have to be honest—as a person who buys her own clothes, I like the prices.
My favorite piece of her is the good old-fashioned wrap dress. You can't get enough of those.
Diane is really classic. I feel like you can throw on her clothes with anything. They're just easy to wear.
Actress MARSHA THOMASON

She may have had a hit called "Foolish," but Ashanti is savvy when it comes to singing, scents and shopping. She just launched a fruity floral fragrance called Precious Jewel by Ashanti, and it's available at Wal-Mart, just where a fan buying her CD might discover it.
