New York City authorities ruled on Aug. 9 that the death of actor Eric Douglas last month (PEOPLE, July 19) was due to an accidental overdose of alcohol and prescription pills. Douglas, 46, the youngest son of actor Kirk Douglas and a brother of Michael Douglas, was found in his Manhattan apartment.... The alleged victim in the Kobe Bryant rape case filed a civil suit on Aug. 10 in Denver, seeking unspecified damages for emotional distress, physical pain and suffering, and public scorn. The plaintiff was working as a hotel clerk last summer when she alleges that she was raped by the L.A. Lakers star (PEOPLE, Aug. 4,2003). Bryant claims the sex was consensual. Jury selection for the criminal trial is due to begin Aug. 27.

World-renowned firefighter Paul "Red" Adair, 89, who estimated that he battled more than 2,000 land and offshore gas and oil well fires worldwide, died of natural causes Aug. 7 in Houston. His life inspired the 1968 film The Hellfighters, starring John Wayne as Adair.
