In a suit filed Oct. 21 in L.A., the Oscar winner—who is seeking unspecified damages—claims that the club has hurt her reputation. "We took her photo down within an hour of being advised by her attorneys," said a rep for the club. "We're baffled."

Army reservist Ivan "Chip" Frederick II, 38, was sentenced to eight years in prison Oct. 21 for his part in abusing Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison last year. Frederick is one of seven members of a Maryland unit charged in the scandal (PEOPLE, May 17, 2004). "I was wrong," said Frederick, who worked out a plea deal with prosecutors.
Robert Merrill, believed to be 85, who sang almost every famous baritone role during his 31 years at the New York Metropolitan Opera but was equally well known for singing the national anthem at his beloved Yankee Stadium, died of natural causes at his New Rochelle, N.Y., home Oct. 23.... Kato, the Akita whose bloody paws led investigators to the dead bodies of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman in 1994, died of natural causes Oct. 21. Known as the lone witness to the infamous crime, the dog—who belonged to Nicole and had been living with her mother, Juditha Brown—was named after Kato Kaelin, the houseguest of Nicole Simpson and O.J.
