eMOTIVe

Who would have ever thought that this alt-metal act would remake songs by Marvin Gaye, Depeche Mode and Joni Mitchell—let alone on the same album? But that's exactly what the band—fronted by Maynard James Keenan, also lead singer of Tool—does on this collection of antiwar and protest songs. Gaye's "What's Going On" is reimagined with moody atmospherics, Depeche Mode's "People Are People" is radically transformed into a dark, industrial-style number, and Mitchell's "Fiddle and the Drum" is performed a cappella with perfect harmony. ITALIC "eMOTIVe"], which also includes two original tunes, mostly keeps things down to a dull roar that is at times a bit too, well, dull. A little more head-banging would have gone a long way. But their motives are in the right place.
