Tom Brokaw's long goodbye from NBC Nightly News was nearly upstaged Nov. 23, when CBS announced that Dan Rather, 73, would step down in March. (The can-Dan drums had been beating since Memogate, Rather's preelection report on President Bush's National Guard service which turned out to be based on suspect documents.) There was no ambiguity to Brokaw's departure. The 64-year-old anchor found himself awash in tributes as he wrapped up 21 years in the chair Dec. 1. Now entering "a whole new stage of my life," he says, "I'm still adjusting to the idea that I don't have to be at a specific place at 6:30 every night. Now between 4 and 6:30 I walk the dogs."
