PARTY LIKE IT'S 2005
The hottest Golden Globes after-party? No contest—it was the exclusive bash at Prince's Hollywood Hills home. The lucky few who scored invites to the soiree got to witness a diverse group of celebs mixing and matching. Natalie Portman
chatted with Leonardo DiCaprio
and Tobey Maguire before heading to a corner to compare notes with Renée Zellweger. Samuel L. Jackson, Mekhi Phifer and Laurence Fishburne played pool in the rec room where Mos Def, Gabrielle Union and Usher later racked up. P. Diddy
crossed paths with Drea de Matteo and Cate Blanchett
. Salma Hayek
and Penélope Cruz chanted "Canta, Justin!" (Spanish for "Sing, Justin!") until Justin Timberlake
took the stage in Prince's living room to belt out the Rolling Stones'"Miss You." Backing him up were jazz legend Herbie Hancock on keyboards, Christina Aguilera
's former ax man Fish and Maroon 5's James Valentine on guitar, while Maroon 5's Adam Levine and Cruz's boyfriend, Matthew McConaughey
, alternated on—no jokes, please—the congas. About the only star missing was newly minted Golden Globe winner Jamie Foxx, who had said he wanted to party with Prince and P. Diddy
during his acceptance speech. (Instead, Foxx hit CAA's afterparty at Chaya Brasserie.) Everyone had such a good time that we hear Prince is planning more weekend celeb get-togethers he'll call "3121"—after his address.
For the stars, almost as important as an awards ceremony are the preshow luxury suites where celebs get to indulge their materialistic sides at the expense of publicity hungry sponsors. On Thursday and Friday, Teri Hatcher
and Nicollette Sheridan both grabbed goodies (including $500 makeup bags) at the Silver Spoon Hollywood Buffet at a mansion in the Hills. The next day Hatcher received a manicure and a pedicure at the HBO Luxury Lounge at the Peninsula Hotel, where she wound up sitting next to Mariska Hargitay. Maybe there was something in the champagne they ordered, because both won Globes the next day.
CHRIS ROCKS THE COMEDY STORE
Not everyone went to the Golden Globes. Chris Rock, who will host the Academy Awards on Feb. 27, skipped the Globes and dropped in at the Comedy Store on L.A.'s Sunset Strip to try out material for his Oscars gig. The comedian did an impromptu hour-long set during which he took jabs at Jude Law
, Colin Farrell
and Lindsay Lohan
, among others. At least Rock had a receptive crowd: Pal David Spade sat in the audience and laughed up a storm.
Jeremy Piven, who escorted his mom to the ceremonies, didn't realize he was supposed to remove the tag on the cuff of his new Prada suit. "Don Cheadle told me to clip it off," he says, laughing at his fashion faux pas....Kate Hudson
brought her agent, CAA's Rick Nicita, as her date: "I wish I had come with my mom, but she came with Diane Keaton."... Virginia Madsen brought two good-luck charms to the Globes: a four-leaf clover and her 10-year-old son's favorite Lego action figure. One of the charms worked—while Madsen lost best supporting actress to Natalie Portman
, her movie Sideways
snagged best musical or comedy.
