Although it's not her film debut, human scarecrow Paris Hilton passes her scream test with flying colors in House of Wax. As long as studios are grinding out blood-spattered slasher movies like this one aimed at teens, she can have gainful employment. Not only does Hilton show a tad more animation than the eerily lifelike (hint, hint) wax figures displayed at the titular tourist attraction but she also boasts the funniest line in this better-than-it-has-to-be creepfest. She plays one of six friends on a road trip who get their first sense that something maybe horribly amiss upon sniffing a foul stench wafting toward them from the forest. Wax's plucky heroine (Cuthbert) insists that they investigate. "Yes, let's go follow the smell," Hilton says with sarcastic enthusiasm. Unfortunately for them, they do. (R)
