If Lenny Kravitz were a woman, he might sound like Nikka Costa. Like Kravitz, for whom she recently opened on tour, Costa is a retro-'70s funk-rocker who wears her influences—from Tina Turner to Chaka Khan—on her vintage sleeves. But while Costa gets the superfly style right on her sophomore effort, she comes up short on the songs, few of which live up to her 2001 single "Everybody Got Their Something." With the right material, though, this soulful belter could really be something.
