BROOKE FIRES BACK
After Tom Cruise
publicly criticizes her therapy and drug treatment for postpartum depression.
For Brooke Shields
and Tom Cruise
, it's a War of the Words. After Cruise, 43, lashed out at Shields's advocacy of drugs to treat postpartum depression ("She doesn't understand the history of psychiatry") on The Today Show
, the actress retaliated with a July 1 Op-Ed piece in The New York Times
. "Comments like those made by Tom Cruise
are a disservice to mothers everywhere," wrote Shields, 40. She suffered from the condition after the 2003 birth of her daughter Rowan. "At my lowest points, I thought of swallowing a bottle of pills or jumping out the window" wrote Shields. "The drugs [Paxil], along with weekly therapy sessions, are what saved me." Echoing Shields: New Jersey acting Gov. Richard J. Codey, whose wife, Mary Jo, struggled with the illness. Said Codey: "Tom Cruise
...should stick to acting and not talk about women who need help." Marie Osmond, who suffered postpartum depression in 1999, has also responded to Cruise's remarks. "When Tom becomes a woman and has a baby and has postpartum, then he can become an expert," she told PEOPLE.
CRUISE ON A CRUISE
Hot off his diatribes against psychiatry, Tom Cruise
is taking a break in the Caribbean: The actor is staying onboard The Freewinds, a 440-ft. ship that serves as a special Scientology church. Enjoying a two-day stay in Curacao, the ship's home port, Cruise and fiancée Katie Holmes
took time July 2 to scuba dive with the island's sea lions. On July 3—Cruise's 43rd birthday—The Freewinds headed off to Aruba.
PINK & CAREY HART
Don't accuse Pink of being shy. As her beau, motocross racer Carey Hart, sped around the track at a competition in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., the 25-year-old singer, according to the Mammoth Times
, held up a sign that read, "Will You Marry Me?" On his following lap, the songstress wrote, "I'm serious!" Hart, 30, who is starring in the latest installment of VH1's The Surreal Life
, scrapped the race and drove off the track to say yes. "Pink was at Carey's side from day one of the races," notes a fellow motocross racer. "They were super cool with the kids. They seemed in love and she couldn't stop smiling after he said yes." Pink's management confirmed the engagement, but offered no further details. The couple, who met at the 2001 X Games and broke up for a time in 2003, have yet to set a wedding date.
T-SHIRT OF THE WEEK
and Lindsay Lohan
spark yet another fashion trend, available online at www.randyandmoss.com for $20.
A SONG FOR WILMER?
Does Ashlee Simpson
have a message for a certain someone? The 20-year-old singer—most recently linked with Wilmer Valderrama, to the dismay of his ex, Lindsay Lohan
—has recorded "I Don't Want Your Boyfriend," say sources. Simpson's rep at first said it was impossible to say if that song was on the album, as the CD was "a work in progress." But is the ditty under consideration for the album? "I don't know," he says. "That's where it gets tricky."
Leo's by the Sea
may soon be creating a luxury getaway for eco-conscious travelers. DiCaprio, 30, who established his own foundation to foster conservation awareness, has reportedly purchased a 104-acre island off the coast of Belize and plans to develop a resort with renewable energy sources. (DiCaprio's rep said he could not reach the actor for comment.) Last year DiCaprio and his girlfriend, Gisele Bündchen. stayed in Belize at a resort owned by real estate mogul Jeff Graham, a possible investor in the venture, Purchase price for the island. Blackadore Caye, is estimated to be $1.75 million. "It's beautiful, pristine," said a broker for Emerald Futures, which handled the deal.
JENNIFER TILLY PLAYS HER HAND
Jennifer Tilly became the first celebrity to win big at the World Series of Poker on June 27, earning $158,000 by beating 600 players in the two-day Ladies No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em tournament. Tilly, 46, an Oscar nominee for Bullets over Broadway, and scary doll accomplice in Seed of Chucky
, laid out her cards for Scoop.
You date poker great Phil "The Unabomber" Laak. Did that help?
I go to all the tournaments with him because I want to be and act like a poker player. I try to do all the stuff that they do: become sleep-deprived, wear scruffy clothes, eat bad food.
Where you a quick study?
He is the greatest teacher in the world. I am super dense. I failed math twice. I was kind of shocked when I discovered that poker involved math.
Ever play those televised celebrity games?
A month and a half ago. I was sure I was going to clean up, because I knew I was better than your average celebrity, who is like, "Is this blackjack?" Well, I finished last, behind Lance Bass and Traci Bingham.
What's your style like?
I am locked in. I have to concentrate. The more I talk, the more my opponent knows. So I settle into a still, calm zone. I am very monosyllabic.
Any difference between playing men and women?
I don't want to be sexist, but girls want everything to be all right. Women think it would be cheating if they were bluffing. You will never see that in a men's game.
Justin Through the Years
The kid in a cowboy hat and Western shirt? None other than a wee Justin Timberlake
, launching his career at age 11 by auditioning for Star Search
. (He made the cut.) He's still singing, of course. A source close to the star confirms that he has recently been in an L.A. studio working on new music, just two months after being hospitalized, reportedly to remove benign growths on his vocal cords. Meanwhile Timberlake is expanding his résumé to include films, and getting good reviews—at least from his costar. "I really wasn't sure about him because he's a singer," said actress Amanda Seyfried, who plays alongside Timberlake in his upcoming feature, the drama Alpha Dog
. "But he blows me away." In between gigs, Timberlake has been pumping iron with Jamie Foxx.
Jackson's Royal Retreat
Less than a month after his acquittal on child sex abuse charges, Michael Jackson, accompanied by his three children and their nanny, jetted to the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom of Bahrain June 29 as a guest of the royal family's Sheik Abdullah. "He is here strictly to recuperate," says a source close to Jackson, noting that the troubled star had lost weight during the 14-week trial. "He is trying to unwind." Still, Jackson has a lot to consider. The source notes that Jackson has been offered deals for personal entertainment projects and Never land developments-perhaps such things as a vineyard or an amusement park. But first, "he needs to rest," says the source, "and then think about a comeback."
