Material Girls
From Punk'd to proper, '80s excess is back—at least when it comes to jewelry. While pop stars like Jewel and Britney Spears are looking "Like a Virgin" with piles of pearls, chains and crosses ("I was totally thinking Madonna!" says Nicky Hilton), Naomi Watts makes it sophisticated with delicate layering. Gold replaces major bling in this retro redux: "Gold puts a glow on your face," says Carmen Electra's stylist Amanda Reno. (In Britney's case the $12,000 necklace from the original Boy Toy might be what has her smiling....)

behind the seams

FACE FIRST: Count on Giorgio Armani to keep celebs ahead of the curve—even when it comes to makeup. On Sept. 9, when Debra Messing, Michelle Pfeiffer and other stars left the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style bash celebrating his contribution to celeb dressing, they scored treats from his yet-to-be-released holiday cosmetics collection. Goody bags included the jewel palette ($58), lip shimmer ($24) and nail polish ($15). Mere mortals can phone-order the same stuff at 800-330-8497—but not until early December....

STELLA-BRATION: Being friends with Stella McCartney certainly has its perks, like getting a jump on the designer's premiere fragrance Stella ($95 for¼ oz.). Chums including Nicole Kidman, Kate Beckinsale and Alicia Silverstone received their supplies of the sensual scent (which features rose and amber) well before it debuted on Sept. 13—McCartney's birthday. Wonder what she wished for when she blew out the candles....

A CHIC YARN: In Hollywood, at least, knitting mania is out of control. Proof? Celebrity Scarves, a tome that profiles yarn-happy stars and highlights the charming warmers that they whipped up for the AIDS charity amfAR. In stores now, the book (part of its proceeds go to amfAR) features an introduction by Isaac Mizrahi and knits by Julianna Margulies, Courtney Thorne-Smith and others. Crave an original? The scarves will be auctioned on eBay from Oct. 6 to Oct. 16. Perfect for the star worshippers on your gift list.

Suits Them

Nicole Kidman and Seal put different spins on their luminous suits: Hers looked serious and his, hip. The difference? Seal went for the silver shoes and cleavage.

Studly: Nicole Kidman in a Dior Homme suit by Hedi Slimane.

Sexy: Seal wearing Costume National (minus shirt and tie).

DOING THE WAVE
In a soft platinum do, Gwen Stefani channels '30s bombshell Jean Harlow, whom she plays in The Aviator. Stars like Jessica Simpson and Milla Jovovich are on the same wavelength—getting their blonde locks coiffed à la Harlow or Marlene Dietrich. The look "evokes glamor and sex appeal," says hairstylist Mark Garrison. Pure Hollywood...

Fresh Cargo Delivery
The celeb jean du jour? Dublin Trousers by Miss Sixty. Outfitted with multiple pockets, zippers and drawstrings, the baggy-legged, bum-fitting cargos are faves of fly girls (and guys) like Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale and Steven Tyler. Says Alba: "They're great booty pants and super comfortable." Sold!
