NYPD Blue star Charlotte Ross, 35, and movie producer Michael Goldman (Big Fat Liar), 36, wed on Oct. 18 in Carmel Valley, Calif. It is the first marriage for both.

BIRTH
Former pro volleyball player and part-time model Gabrielle Reece, 33, and her husband, professional surfer Laird Hamilton, 39, welcomed their first child, daughter Reece Viola, on Oct. 11 in Santa Monica. The couple wed in November 1997.

ENGAGED
Actor John O'Hurley, 49, best known for playing catalog king J. Peterman on TV's Seinfeld, and Lisa Mesloh, 31, a Golf Channel executive, plan to wed next year. O'Hurley recently proposed by hiding an engagement ring in the cup at the 7th hole of the famed golf course in Pebble Beach, Calif. O'Hurley was divorced from Third Watch star Eva LaRue in 1994.

TROUBLE
Rapper Nelly, 28, reported that $1 million in jewelry was stolen from his Las Vegas hotel room Oct. 27 while he was attending the 2003 Radio Music Awards. Singer Michelle Branch, 20, a performer at the ceremony, also reported that computer equipment was stolen from her room at the same hotel.

UPDATE
On Oct. 27 in L.A., actor Tom Sizemore (Black Hawk Down), 41, was sentenced to six months in jail for abusing his ex-girlfriend, former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss (PEOPLE, Aug. 25,2003). Sizemore's sentence maybe reduced after he finishes a drug-rehabilitation program. In a statement the actor apologized and blamed "personal demons."

DEATH

Singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, 34, who was nominated for an Academy Award for the song "Miss Misery" from the 1997 hit film Good Will Hunting, died on Oct. 21 in L.A. of what appears to be a self-inflicted stab wound. Smith, known for his dark, introspective songs, had released five solo albums....

Actor Jack Elam, 82, best known as the wild-eyed villain in dozens of westerns including 1951's Rawhide, died of heart failure on Oct. 20 in L.A....

Longtime Price Is Bight announcer Rod Roddy, 66, died of complications from colon and breast cancer on Oct. 27 in L.A. Roddy, who taped his last show two months ago, began telling contestants to "Come on down!" in 1986-Singer-songwriter Rosie Nix Adams, 45, the daughter of the late June Carter Cash, was found dead from carbon monoxide poisoning on Oct. 24 on a bus near Fredonia, Tenn. Sheriff's deputies ruled the death accidental.
